At the end of the 1890’s and the beginning of the 1900’s, Gillette came up with what then was a crazy idea. Give away the razor for free but charge people for the blade! That made Gillette a millionaire and lifted his company to market dominance.
That strategy is still as successful today as it was back then . Cell phone companies give away “free” cell phones but charge you to use them. Companies give away software but charge for you for implementation and support. Today, one of the most successful examples of this is with your printer.
As many of you know, sometimes you can get a free printer or receive large discount for one when you purchase a computer. This might seem like a great deal for you, but it is just razor and the blade strategy. The printer is the razor and the toner is the blade. Printers only use one type of toner which is usually made by the company who made the printer. Since you can only use this type of toner, the company just created a monopoly and can now charge you an arm and a leg for it! So before you switch printers or buy one, you should always check to see what toner it uses and if it is worth using. You can always give away or eBay that free printer if it’s toner costs are extremely high.
Check the prices of your printer’s toner below to get a good deal. Do not let your printer’s company take advantage of you!
